THE VIRTUAL PLOD HALF MARATHON CHALLENGE…
But what about runners who want to get involved with the Plod but aren’t yet up to the challenge of a Half Marathon, I hear you cry…?
So, we propose to you THE VIRTUAL PLOD. An online-managed running event, that entrants can do totally in their own time and in their own chosen method.
We are proposing that we run a Virtual Plod this year in the two months before the full race. Entrants can apply online to register and this challenge will be open to children aged 17 and under (£6 entry) and adults (£10 entry).
Entrants must commit to running/walking/doing gym treadmill mileage of a half marathon distance (13.1 miles), but in as many chunks as they like over the two months preceding the main Puddletown Plod event.
For example, hardcore runners may choose to run a half marathon distance in one go. Other runners could run, say, 4 lots (over different days) of three and a bit miles anywhere they like to make the half marathon total distance. Beginners can even do 26 half mile walks to get there.... It’s a challenge, not a race competition, so you are just challenging yourself to complete the distance. It’s not timed; finishers will appear in a “hall of fame listing” and will get a completion certificate and a proper, limited edition, bespoke Puddletown Plod 2019 finisher’s medal.
The only rule is that the mileage you do to create your own half marathon must be activity (walking, running or treadmill work) that you don’t normally do in your everyday life. So, if you normally walk to school or work you can’t count that, but if you add an extra bit on each day to your walk, you can count that bit.
- Allows people who are volunteering to marshal on the main Plod race day to still get involved. • Allows children to take part.
- Allows less experienced runners to take part; encourages aspiring runners to get started and to get active.
- Does not interrupt the main race day.
- You can do it in your own time.
- You can use it as motivation to create your own mini running groups (or as part of the Couch to 5k programme, RIOT, EHH beginner training or any other introduction to running group)
The Virtual Plod is open to children and adults alike, regardless of ability or geographical location. Find us on Facebook at “The Virtual Plod Half Marathon Challenge 2019”
